Overview

From 2020 to 2021, Anika Development Agency (ADA) partnered with Internews, a global non profit supporting independent media in over 100 countries, to implement the Communication for Development (C4D) programme in Yei River County, South Sudan.

This collaboration was delivered through Access Radio 88.8 FM Yei, a community based radio station co-founded and developed by ADA with Internews support. Established during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Access Radio became a vital source of accurate, life saving information, humanitarian updates and civic education for local communities.

Internews works worldwide to ensure that people have access to trustworthy information to make informed choices, improve their livelihoods, and hold institutions accountable.

Together with ADA, the initiative in Yei strengthened local journalism skills, media sustainability, and community engagement, laying the foundation for a stronger, freer, and more resilient media sector in South Sudan.

Impact (Highlights)

  •  Launch and sustainability of Access Radio 88.8 FM Yei, providing trusted news and civic education to thousands during the pandemic and beyond.

  • Training of local journalists and presenters in professional reporting, fact checking, and community driven storytelling.

  • Improved media self sustainability, enabling Access Radio to continue operations post project.

  • Enhanced community dialogue through participatory radio programmes that connected citizens with humanitarian actors, local authorities and civil society.

  • Contribution to a freer, more independent media environment in South Sudan, aligned with global Internews efforts in over 100 countries.

Why This Matters

In times of crisis, access to reliable information can save lives and build trust. The Internews ADA partnership ensured that Yei communities were informed, engaged and empowered during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Access Radio continues to serve as a platform for civic education, dialogue and community driven development, proving the long term value of investing in local media.
