Chinese Embassy Engages Media Mentors Network to Support Media Growth in South Sudan

(SEPT 26, 2025 – JUBA) – The Chinese Embassy in South Sudan has met with representatives of the Media Mentors Network to discuss ways of strengthening media development in the country. The meeting took place in Juba on 23 September 2025 and brought together media practitioners, educators, and embassy officials.

The Media Mentors Network, represented by its Chairperson, Marina Modi, and Coordinator, Dhieu William, is currently running a six month Media and Information Literacy project funded by UNESCO South Sudan. The project aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to better understand media, use it responsibly, and contribute to positive social change.

During the meeting, Ms Modi explained that the project is helping to build critical thinking skills among youth and empowering them to engage constructively in public life. She added that the support of international partners is vital for building a strong and inclusive media sector in South Sudan.

Mr William shared experiences from his professional learning in China, noting that exposure to different media systems can provide valuable lessons for South Sudan. He underlined the importance of exchange programmes where journalists and educators can share knowledge across countries, leading to stronger and more resilient media institutions.

Officials from the Chinese Embassy expressed interest in supporting the work of the Media Mentors Network through training and knowledge-sharing opportunities. They proposed exploring exchange visits for South Sudanese media practitioners to China and hosting Chinese experts in Juba to provide direct mentorship and capacity building.

A Statement by Media Mentors Network said the collaboration reflects a shared vision of empowering local communities through media. For South Sudan, where access to reliable information remains a challenge, partnerships of this kind are essential for promoting education, accountability and development.

The Media Mentors Network mentors young journalists, builds skills and creates spaces for dialogue. With support from partners like UNESCO and interest from institutions such as the Chinese Embassy, the organisation hopes to expand its impact in supporting a more vibrant, informed and responsible media landscape in South Sudan.
