Overview

In September 2021, Anika Development Agency (ADA), through its Communication for Development (C4D) programme, partnered with the National Press Club South Sudan (NPC-SS) with support from UNESCO to deliver a two day in-house training on gender sensitive reporting for journalists at Access Radio 88.8 FM Yei.

The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of local journalists in gender-responsive reporting, ethical journalism, and media professionalism, while ensuring that women’s voices and gender issues are fairly represented in the media.

NPC SS, a non profit media organisation in South Sudan, works to promote professional journalism, advocate for press freedom, and raise public awareness on key development issues. By bringing this training to Yei, NPC-SS and ADA supported Access Radio to improve its ability to produce programmes that address gender equality, women’s empowerment, and community dialogue.

Impact

  • 10 Access Radio journalists trained in gender sensitive reporting, media ethics and professional journalism practices.

  • Development of new radio programmes on gender and equality, aimed at raising community awareness.

  • Increased capacity of community radio staff to package and produce balanced media content that addresses women’s issues.

  • Greater community awareness on gender equality through radio broadcasts in Yei River County.

  • Strengthened commitment to inclusive and ethical journalism in South Sudan, supported by UNESCO and NPCSS.

Why This Matters

Women’s voices are often underrepresented in South Sudan’s media. By equipping journalists with the skills to report responsibly and sensitively on gender, this project contributed to inclusive storytelling, greater accountability and stronger community dialogue. It helps ensure that media plays a role in advancing gender equality and protecting human rights.
