Overview

In September 2021, Anika Development Agency (ADA), in partnership with the National Press Club (NPC) South Sudan, conducted a two day in-house training for journalists at Access Radio 88.8 FM Yei. Supported by UNESCO, this training aimed to strengthen gender sensitive reporting and improve the capacity of community journalists to promote gender equality and inclusion through the media.

The National Press Club South Sudan is a non profit media organisation that provides a platform for local and international journalists to share experiences, promote professional media practices, and advocate for transparency, accountability and freedom of expression. Together with ADA, the project focused on equipping Access Radio staff with skills to package, produce and air programmes on gender equality, ethics, and journalist protection.

This initiative also contributed to ADA’s Communication for Development (C4D) and Education and Human Capital Development programmes, which use media, civic education, and skills training to inform, educate and empower communities.

Impact (Highlights)

  • 12 Access Radio journalists trained in gender responsive reporting, journalism ethics and professional conduct.

  • Improved capacity to produce programmes on gender and equality, reaching thousands of listeners across Yei River County.

  • Enhanced public awareness on women’s rights and gender issues, encouraging inclusive community dialogue.

  • Strengthened protection and support for women journalists through practical skills and knowledge sharing.

  • Contributed to bridging the gender gap in media representation in South Sudan.

Why This Matters

Media plays a critical role in shaping perceptions of gender equality and inclusion. By training journalists to report ethically and sensitively on gender issues, this project ensures that women’s voices are heard, their challenges are addressed and communities are better informed. Such initiatives help foster a more inclusive, fair and democratic society in South Sudan.
