Overview

In 2025, Anika Development Agency (ADA), through its affiliation with Access Radio 88.8 FM Yei, partnered with the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) to implement a Communication for Development (C4D) project.

Founded in 2003, AMDISS was established by South Sudanese journalists in the diaspora to fill the information gap in the country, build media capacity, and advocate for human rights, democracy and press freedom. Since 2015, AMDISS has been providing long term training and mentorship programmes for journalists, as well as advocacy for media law reform and stakeholder dialogue.

Together with ADA, this project focuses on empowering local journalists, strengthening civic education and fostering dialogue on freedom of expression and good governance.

Through Access Radio and other platforms, communities in Yei River County gain reliable information, opportunities to voice their concerns and access to platforms that encourage open dialogue.

Impact

  • 30+ local journalists trained and mentored on ethical reporting, human rights and governance issues.

  • Community radio programmes aired on press freedom, democracy, and civic participation, reaching thousands in Yei River County.

  • Dialogue forums between media, civil society and local authorities to promote mutual understanding and accountability.

  • Advocacy for media freedom and enabling legal frameworks that protect journalists and independent media houses in South Sudan.

  • Strengthened community access to impartial information, empowering citizens to participate in governance and development.

Why This Matters

South Sudan’s democracy and peace depend on free, independent and professional media. By equipping journalists with skills, fostering open dialogue and advocating for press freedom, this project helps build a society where information flows freely, communities are better informed, and institutions are held accountable.
