Overview

With support from BBC Media Action and funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Anika Development Agency, in affiliation and partnership with Access Radio 88.8 FM, is implementing a six month initiative to empower young people and strengthen community action against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in South Sudan.

The project, “Advancing Youth Civic Engagement and Action Against SGBV,” uses radio as a tool for social change under Anika’s Communication for Development (C4D) programme. The initiative aims to inform, engage and mobilise communities across Central Equatoria State and neighbouring regions through interactive radio broadcasts, drama, and youth led discussions.

Broadcast content includes a 60 episode drama series addressing civic engagement, gender equality and violence prevention. Each drama is followed by a live 15 minute call in segment where listeners share views and seek advice. Additionally, a series of “Madam Smart” radio skits short, relatable dramas are aired repeatedly to reinforce key messages in an accessible and entertaining way.

Community engagement is deepened through structured listener feedback, weekly reporting and capacity building for Access Radio staff. Selected team members receive training and mentoring to enhance content quality, strengthen media accountability and ensure sustainability beyond the project period.
